The Norwegian Mapping Authority (Statens Kartverk) has awarded a large scale hydrographic survey contract of approximately 3700 km² area to Fugro OSAE GmbH of Germany. The 2010 survey campaign extends approximately 50-100km offshore, some 450 km north of the Arctic Circle. Fugro’s 70m hydrographic survey flagship, the MV FUGRO GAUSS, equipped with Kongsberg’s latest high resolution multibeam echo sounder systems, will commence the survey in spring 2010.
MAREANO is Norway’s programme to fill knowledge gaps related to seabed conditions and biodiversity along the northern Norwegian coast. The goal is to contribute to a better knowledge base for managing human activities such as fishing and oil and gas exploitation. The acquisition of detailed and accurate bathymetry is an important first step in the collection of seafloor data.
Fugro OSAE has also surveyed parts of the Mareano project area in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and has collected high resolution bathymetry data for Norway’s electronic nautical charts.
